A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens |
I've always loved the tale of Ebeneezer Scrooge. I watched the Mickey Mouse version as a kid and thought it was great. A few years back I finally read the book. In my humble opinion, I honestly believe it's one of the best books ever written. There are layers upon layers of rich principles woven throughout the story. I've read the book to the kids. It's not the easiest read and it gets a little scary but it teaches so much that it's become a Christmas tradition. We don't read the book together every year but I teach several lessons from it throughout the Christmas season. We watched the movie again tonight. I love it. If you don't have time to read or watch A Christmas Carol, the Mormon Channel has done an amazing dramatization of the story. (Listen here) A few days ago I was baking and listening to the story. The following passage popped out at me this year. Scrooge is with the Ghost of Christmas Present. They are watching the Cratchit family on Christmas day. This is what they observed:
"They were not a handsome family; they were not well dressed; their shoes were far from being water-proof; their clothes were scanty; and Peter might have known, and very likely did, the inside of a pawnbroker's. But they were happy, grateful, pleased with one another, and contented with the time..."
Sometimes I feel like the Cratchit's. We don't have the nicest things but I pray we are happy, grateful and contented with the time spent together as a family. Reflecting on the birth of our Savior as we take the time to ponder His life.
"God bless us, everyone!"
