Breakfast and a book

It's been on the back of my mind for awhile to start a children's book club. A few months ago Megan was reading The Secret Garden and I thought let's turn this into a book club. I sent out a mass email to everyone I knew (who lived close) and we started. We read The Secret Garden for the first month. It was sorta long for the kids and the language is really old (it was written 100 years ago!). Nevertheless, it is one of the most delightful books I've ever read. Porter followed along just fine. At the end he wanted to be Master Colin and order everyone around. That didn't go over so well! The book club discussion went great. We meet early Saturday mornings, discuss the book and have a little breakfast. Our second book was My Side of the Mountain. We decided on something a little more for the boys. This was perfect! This book was one of Brett's favorites as a kid. It's the ultimate adventure for any boy. Running away from home and living in the mountains. For this discussion Meg was the only girl! Our group is small but I think the perfect size. This book worked out great because it was short (160 pages) and much easier to read. We have one child in charge of the discussion. They come with a bio of the author and questions to ask. If you have never read a chapter book to your kids, START NOW! It is a wonderful experience. I would read The Secret Garden to Porter on his bed at night. After we would read, then we'd talk about his day (if he didn't fall asleep first). Porter got to the point he would say, "When do we get to talk about my day?" We've had some good discussions and not all about the book. Next month is "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever". If you haven't read it-read it with us! Send me messages about what you or your kids thought. You'll be amazed what you can learn from your kids through books!

  1. I am so excited to hear about your book club! I am jealous. I am helping with Noah's at his school, but it is just not the same as getting together with like minds. We just read "The Secret School" by Avi. I highly reccomend it. I will get Noah started on "my side of the Mountain." he hasn't read it yet.
